Intrepid sports reporter Jake ’14 returns with an update on Bay’s varsity sports teams with his Senior Signature Projects blog.
Late in the spring season, two Bay teams, lacrosse and girls soccer, have been crowned champions of their leagues and received league trophies. The baseball team, which is undefeated in league, is likely to join the list by the end of this week. In addition, the boys volleyball team shared the regular season league championship with Chinese Christian before losing in an exciting championship game.
Baseball
For the second year in a row, Bay baseball has gone undefeated against BCL Central league opponents. This year’s undefeated league season is particularly impressive considering Bay won every single game by at least ten runs. The current 19-game league regular season win streak that the Breakers will look to extend next year is the longest in BCL Central history.
Since May 6, Bay has three wins and one loss. The first two wins came on May 6 and May 8 against Pescadero and Waldorf, respectively. Both league games ended in only five innings, as Bay mercy-ruled (win by at least ten runs) both teams. The team’s nine-game win streak came to an end on Saturday, when Bay played their worst game of the season in a 15-0 loss to University, who the Breakers defeated 6-0 last year. Then, on May 12, the last home game of the season and therefore senior day, the Breakers grabbed their third non-league win with a 10-0 victory against BCL West foe International HS in five innings.
The Bay regular season will finish up on Thursday, May 15, when the Breakers travel to Doyle Park for a 5 p.m. game against Sonoma Academy. Then on Saturday, May 17, Bay will be facing the second-seeded Gateway Gators at Pescadero HS for the BCL Central championship. In the three games against Gateway this season, Bay was victorious 17-1, 12-0, and 14-4. In addition, be sure to check the NCS Baseball website on Sunday, May 18 around noon to see what seed Bay is awarded for the North Coast Sectionals.
Lacrosse
The Bay lacrosse team capped off an amazing season with the first lacrosse championship in the sports history at Bay! It’s amazing to think that the Breakers have won the championship only two years after the inaugural lacrosse season at Bay. John Ludeke ’15 scored the first Bay goal of the game, and the Breakers continued to score on their way to an 11-5 victory against Stuart Hall in the championship. The team seemed to benefit from support from the largest attendance of supporters at a game this season.
While the team deserves to celebrate their great victory, the season is not over. In the NCS Division 2 Boys Lacrosse Bracket, Bay was unfortunately given the 16 seed, and they will play the 1 seed, Acalanes HS, on Wednesday, May 14 at the Acalanes campus at 7 p.m. The 17-3 Dons are currently ranked 17th in the state of California on maxpreps.com, and the Breakers (8-3 and 120th in California) will need to play their best game of the season if they want to pull off the huge upset.
Boys Volleyball
The May 9 matchup between Bay and Chinese Christian boys volleyball was more than just a finals game. The competition between the two regular season co-league champions would provide us with the real champion of the BCL. After Bay defeated St. Elizabeth and Chinese Christian defeated OMI earlier in the week, the two powerhouses of the BCL were ready to face off for one last time. The CC Rams got off to a strong start, winning the first set 25-22 and the second set 25-16. With their backs against the wall, the Breakers gave everything they had, winning the third set 25-21 and the fourth set 25-12. In the fifth and final set, Bay gave it their all once again, but were unable to surpass Chinese Christian as the Rams won the final set 15-11. The result was tragic to the Breakers and senior Sam Koch in particular, but the effort of the Bay boys’ and their play on the verge of defeat showed the heart of the team. In addition, Koch and Jackson Forman ’15 didn’t leave the playoffs empty-handed, as they were both voted onto the all-tournament team.
After receiving the 12-seed in the NCS Boy’s Division 3 Volleyball Bracket, the 11-5 Breakers will be taking on BCL East champion Bentley (20-5), the 5-seed, at Bentley HS on Wednesday, May 14 at 7 p.m. Bentley defeated Bay in three sets at the start of this year, and while the Breakers are playing better now than they were at the start of the season, it will still take a lot of work to defeat the Bentley squad.
Girls Soccer
Bay Girls Soccer just keeps on winning. After a league season with nine victories and one tie, the Breakers defeated Waldorf 3-0 in the semi-finals, and then beat Drew 2-0 in the finals to win the championship. The first goal of the championship game, which took place at Kezar Stadium on Friday May 9, was scored in the first half by leading goal scorer Kendall You Mak ’16. Then midway through the second half, Cayla Chow ’17 extended the lead to two goals with a shot that ended in the bottom-right corner of the Drew goal. Even with a multi-goal lead, Bay experienced a lot of pressure in the second half, as Drew had multiple opportunities to score and were given a number of corner kicks. With less than five minutes to go in the game, Drew seemed to have a chance to cut the lead to one goal when there was a shot at the Bay goal that flew above senior Fiona Twiford’s head, who was filling in for injured junior goalie Michelle Chui. Luckily for Fiona and the rest of the Breakers, the ball hit off the crossbar, and Fiona was eventually able to boot the ball towards midfield. As the ball left the area surrounding Bay’s goal, the Bay students at the game all stood up and cheered as they recognized how close the girls were to a victory. Once the referee blew his whistle to signify the end of the game, the Bay girls on the field and on the sideline were finally able to come together and celebrate the monumental victory. For Coach Rusty Taylor, the Breakers victory, which signified the first championship during his short tenure at Bay, was yet another achievement in his historic coaching career.
The Breakers now find themselves preparing for an NCS game against the 6-seeded Drake Pirates that will take place on Wednesday, May 14 at Boxer Stadium at 5 p.m. Bay was awarded the 11th seed in the NCS Girls Soccer Bracket, and the coaching staff and players alike believe that they have a great chance to win the NCS game.
